Medicare will cover the LapBand for patients irrespective of your age. It is not just for those patients with Medicare over 65. You have to meet specific requirements, and your surgeon and facility must be designated a Center of Excellence.
Here’s some more specifics:
You generally must have a BMI over 35 with one or more weight related health problems such as sleep apnea, diabetes, severe hypertension, severe joint problems and a few others.
You can’t be smoking and if you are a smoker must quit prior to surgery. You must participate in a weight loss plan guided by a doctor or nutritionist prior to surgery. And you must clear a psychological evaluation.
And your hospital and doctor must be a certified bariatric surgery center of excellence by with the Surgical Review Corporation or the American College of Surgeons.
