Being in the weight loss field for most of my professional career has taught me several things. One of the most important is that success with weight loss comes with changes in food intake. (I hate the word ‘diet’.)
This requires adding healthy foods that can substitute for other less healthy options. For the person trying to lose weight, we shouldn’t expect them to never eat sweets again, or never have a treat, but rather help them find a better alternative to what they are having.
So I, and my weight loss surgery partner (and wife) Dr. Rachael Keilin, love to experiment with new recipes and new foods that we can eat and recommend to our patients.
That’s why we were very curious to try this new recipe from our friend Brian Johnson. It’s a recipe for blackberry almond flour scones and the picture was so tasty looking we had to try it. In the last week we have made two separate batches and they have passed our personal taste test and met the approval of our nursing staff at the office.
Note that “we made the batches” means my wife bought the ingredients, mixed them all together, baked them and made the final product. Those yummy delicious scones were then available for the family to eat. My role was that I might have helped put dishes away in the dishwasher. Maybe.
These almond flour scones are a great alternative to any kind of processed sweet food you crave, such as a muffin or Oreo cookies or anything like that.
The recipe calls for honey or maple syrup, which together with the berries add a nice amount of sweetness to the scones.

Ingredients: 2.5 cups of Almond Meal/Flour 1/2 tsp sea salt
2 organic/pastured eggs
4 tablespoons honey or other natural sweetener (I used maple syrup) or 4 dates, pureed
1/3 cup melted butter, ghee (clarified butter) or coconut oil (choose 1 of three or blend)
1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Grease a baking sheet with butter or coconut oil.
- In a medium bowl, mix together dry ingredients.In a separate bowl, whisk eggs until combined.
- Add melted butter, and honey.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients.
- Fold in berries.
- Drop ¼ cup of dough onto the baking sheet, shape into triangle shapes (this is harder than it seems so I just made them biscuit round)
- Bake 15 -20 minutes (times may vary based on desired consistency)
