When will I get pregnant after bariatric surgery?

I had the Lap-Band surgery March 2010 and have lost more than 83 lbs. I am very happy about this and will continue to lose more I am sure. The problem is, one of the reasons I had the surgery was, as well as getting healthy, was to get pregnant after the first year of weight loss. However, my husband and I have been trying since March and we are not pregnant. The OB problems I once had before the surgery are not completely gone and I was wondering if you have had any patients that have had any problems getting pregnant BECAUSE of the surgery. I read the article on the website about getting pregnant after Lap Band but it seems most of your patients are not having any problems with it. That is why I am writing. My husband and I are disappointed that we are not pregnant yet and were wondering if you could give us some encouragement.

Great question! Congratulations on your weight loss. As Dr. Keilin noted in her article Getting pregnant with the LapBand, the weight loss seen by previously infertile women will often help fertility. There is no way that you would have any problems getting pregnant because of the LapBand. The LapBand surgery in no way interferes with your female reproductive organs, and the weight loss would only serve to help your hormonal cycle become more regular leading to an improved chance in becoming pregnant. I suggest visiting and consulting with a reproductive and infertility specialist. It might be too soon after your weight loss to see your hormonal cycle improve, if that is the issue in your infertility. Good luck!

I agree with Dr. Hekier. The fact that some of your gynecological issues have yet to resolve may mean that a) you still have some weight to lose before all of those problems resolve or b) that some of the problems may not be weight or hormonally related and may instead be secondary to a completely unrelated cause. It is definitely worth consulting a reproductive specialist and in the end, giving it a little more time. In my practice I have several patients who disregarded birth control as their children were in their teens and they didn’t think they could ever get pregnant again because of their weight or other medical conditions. One just delivered twins 6 months ago and seems a little sleepy and shellshocked, but happy. Even if your weight was not the cause of your fertility problems, losing the weight will certainly make any pregnancy easier and healthier for both you and the baby. Let us know what happens :)
